One Day Workshops

 

12-Step Facilitation- 6 hours - $90
This one day training will provide an immersive experience into the elements of TSFs theoretical, structural, and clinical content. Participants will receive materials that were used in Project Match, which validated TSF as an evidence-based practice. Activities will include: didactic presentations, experiential exercises, and small-group practice exercises. Facilitated by Rick Wheeler, MA, CADC I.

 

 

Adolescents and Addiction - 6 hours - $90
This workshop will explore risk factors for substance use and abuse among youth: the ways they are different from adults, co-morbid problems among youth, and the impact of use on developmental processes. Focus on the distinctive needs of adolescents utilizing multi-systems for treatment, treatment planning and treatment strategies as supported by evidenced based practices.

Addiction and Personality Disorders - 6 hours - $90
This workshop will explore the world view and interpersonal style of clients with Cluster B personality disorders, examine the impact of drug use on the expression of pathology, explore strategies for engagement and retention of these challenging clients and learn to appreciate the "pathology" of early abstinence.

Assessing and Treating Sexual Addiction - 6 hrs - $90
This workshop presents diagnostic criteria and assessment tools for sexual addiction. Treatment strategies and the recovery process will be explored to help counselors develop concrete intervention tools for sex addicts and their families. Taught by Steven DeLugach, MS, LPC.


 

COD: Anxiety Disorders - 6 hours - $90
Learn how to recognize the symptoms associated with anxiety disorders such as PTSD, Panic Disorder, Generalized Anxiety, OCD etc. and the impact they have on substance use disorders. Participants will explore assessment and screening tools used to determine presence and/or severity of these disorders. The workshop will cover Evidence Based Treatments, including a basic understanding of the medications used to treat anxiety. Attendees will be given several scales and screening tools they can use in their work. They will also be provided with information on how to use and score the scales.

Learn how to recognize the symptoms associated with mood disorders such as Bipolar Disorder, Major Depression, Dysthymia etc. and the impact they have on substance use disorders. Participants will explore assessment and screening tools used to determine presence and/or severity of these disorders.  The workshop will cover Evidence Based Treatments, including a basic understanding of the medications used to treat mood disorders. Attendees will be given several scales and screening tools they can use in their work. They will also be provided with information on how to use and score the scales.

Learn how to recognize the symptoms associated with psychotic disorders such as Schizophrenia, Psychotic Disorders, Delusional Disorders, etc. and the impact they have on substance use disorders. An overview of drug abuse treatment principles for individuals involved in the criminal justice system. Learn differences and similarities between criminal and addicted thinking, including impact on the recovery process, application of Evidence Based Practices showing effectiveness with the population.

This one day workshop will explore myths and stereotypes and introduce best practices in engagement, prevention and sustainability in meeting the needs  of homeless addicts.

Racism as an Ethical Issue - 6 hours - $90
Meets 6 CE hour Ethics requirement.  This workshop builds awareness of uninitentional counselor bias. Explores cultural context, counselor defenses, microaggressions, and strategies to enhance counselor competence. Uses video, small group discussion and individual exploration activities.

  Relationships and Addiction - 6 hours - $90
Develop an understanding of the impact of addication and recovery on the phases of a couple's life together. Special focus on destructive vs. healthy communication styles, review of Oregon Evidence Based Practices for couples therapy related to alcoholism and drug abuse, learning several interventions within those practices. Saboteurs of Recovery: Co-dependency & Shame - 6 hours - $90
The words shame and co-dependency have been over-used, but the caustic nature of the conditions often threatens the recovering addict. Not talking about it does little to help. This workshop will explore models and techniques to help clients move from co-dependency and shame to become their more authentic selves.

Trauma and Substance Use - 6 hours - $90
This one day workshop will focus on identifying the biology of addiction and trauma as well as learning to categorize clinical symptoms that present with each. Participants will explore evidence based practices designed to deal with the difficulty of maintaining sobriety and the healing of traumatic memories.

Treating Latinos and Diverse Cultures - 6 hours - $90
This one day workshop explores Latino and other diverse populations history, cultural values and barriers to effective treatment. Solutions from counselor awareness to systematic change will be discussed.

Treating Marijuana Dependence - 6 hours - $90
This one day course covers NIDA best practices with marijuana dependent clients, educating clients around the scientifically defensible research on the health consequences of marijuana use. The increasing potency of marijuana and neuropharmacology of THC.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) - 12 hours - $150

This SUD evidence-based practice is a form of CBT whose goals are to get people to commit to a meaningful life and learn skills to accept that suffering is part of that life. ACT has broad applications addressing many forms of distress people may experience. This is a highly experiential workshop led by Christeine Terry, Ph.D. from Seattle, who is very active in the ACT treatment and research community!

 

 

 

 

Client/Counselor Boundary Issues: Resolving Transference and Counter Transference Problems - 12 hours - $150
This two day course will enhance skills in recognizing and resolving transference and countertransference with addiction treatment clients, enhance awareness of counselor vulnerability for boundary problems, and will assist in developing a plan to avoid boundary violations.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) - 12 hours - $135
Although CBT forms the basis of much treatment, many clinicians have no training, or don't even know that they are using CBT! This course will explore the history of CBT, the cognitive model of substance abuse, adapting CBT for the addicted population, with emphasis on relapse prevention and craving. Participants will have active learning experiences. Daystar is delighted to have this course presented by Lisa Bevans, MS, LAC, QMHP, a recent transplant from the South. She is an experienced teacher, thorough and energetic!

 

 

 

Co-Occuring Disorders - 12 hours - $135
Co-Occurring Disorders; NEW and IMPOROVED: This workshop will review the principles of Co-occurring Disorders (COD), brain functions and reward pathway and changes that occur with MH/AOD.  There will be a focus on assessment and screening, primary symptomatology associated with Mental Health Disorders, and evidenced based practices and usual treatments for COD’s, including pharmacotherapy. Attendees will be given several scales they can use in their work. Among them: MHSF III (Mental Health Screening Form), PCL (PTSD Checklist), SIAS (Social Interaction Anxiety Scale), SSI-AOD (Simple Screening Instrument for Alcohol and other Drugs).  They will also be provided with information on how to use and score the scales.

DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) -12 hours - $150
This workshop emphasizes developing an  understanding of DBT and the foundation for developing the skill set necessary to use DBT effectively with a wide variety of clients.DBT helps empower clients to improve emotional containment and develop skills to improve functioning. Participants will  gain experience by practicing specific DBT techniques.

Families and Addiction - 12 hours - $135

This initial workshop is designed to provide an overview of the theories, addictive processes, roles and relational problems that are evident in the treatment of families with addiction and will provide a foundation for further one day trainings that will explore more specific topics on Families and Addiction.

This two day course covers 54 theories of research-based principles of effective drug treatment along with traditional counseling theory. This course is designed as a refresher for the National Certification Examinations.

Peer Recovery Mentor Training- 40 Hour Hybrid training- $390
A true hybrid class! Live segment includes Communication and Motivational skills, Group facilitation, Crisis intervention, Assertive outreach, Culture, Trauma, and Ethics and Boundaries. Training includes 24 live class hours and 16 online hours. Team taught by Nikki Johnson, Eric Martin, Sarah Wheeler, Michael Razavi, and Ashley Brown.
